Crowns and Bridges, London

Let’s have a closer look at crowns and bridges at the Harley Street Implant Centre. So, how do we provide premium dental crowns and bridges?

What is a dental crown?

So, what actually is a dental crown? A dental crown is a custom-made cap, typically crafted from porcelain or metal, that covers a damaged, decayed, or weakened tooth. The dentist uses these to restore the tooth's shape, strength, and appearance. Essentially, when a tooth gets worn down, it become more susceptible to damage and decay. Also, the aesthetics of the tooth can be compromised as a result. Because of this, it is important for the dentist build the tooth back up using something like a crown, which protects it.

What is a dental bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed restoration which a dentist can used to replace one or more missing teeth, by anchoring an artificial tooth (or teeth) to the adjacent natural teeth or dental implants. Unlike a dental crown, which a dentist uses to fix damaged teeth, dental bridges replace missing teeth, not worn down teeth. Not only does a dental bridge improve aesthetics, it also improves function too!

Whether you are considering a crown or a bridge, book an appointment today to discuss with our team!

When teeth get damaged or worm down, they become more susceptible to caries and more damage. Because of this, dental crowns are used to repair damaged, decayed or weakened teeth.

First, the dentist drills a small portion of your tooth, to give some room for the crown to sit on top of the tooth. Once the crown is ready, the dentist then cements the crown over the top of this prepared tooth.

A crown placed over a dental implant involves a few key steps. First, the oral surgeon surgically inserts a titanium post into the jawbone, serving as a replacement root for the missing tooth. After the implant integrates with the bone through a healing process, the oral surgeon attaches an abutment (small connector) to the implant, which will hold the crown.

The dental lab will then create a custom crown, created to match the size, shape, and colour of your natural teeth. Finally, the dentist securely attaches this crown to the abutment, resulting in a stable and natural-looking tooth that functions like a real one, supported directly by the implant in the jawbone.

A crown does not replace a missing tooth; it covers and restores an existing damaged tooth.

A crown is placed over a single tooth that the dentist prepares beforehand. The dentist ensures this crown stays on the prepared tooth by cementing it.

A bridge is a treatment a dentist uses to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring an artificial tooth (or teeth) to adjacent natural teeth or implants. It “bridges” the gap between teeth.

A bridge uses one or more surrounding teeth as support (called abutments), which are crowned to anchor the artificial tooth or teeth in place.

A bridge is designed specifically to replace missing teeth, filling in gaps with artificial teeth that are anchored by crowns on the adjacent natural teeth or implants.
