When should you have your wisdom teeth removed?

Removing lower wisdom teeth is recommended if you exhibit signs of disease, such as decay or infection in the gum around the top of the tooth. Additionally, wisdom tooth removal is advisable for preventing gum disease, periapical infection, decay, and gum disease around the lower second molar.

Wisdom tooth infection symptoms

1. Painful and swollen gum

Typically a continuous, throbbing pain that is worse on pressure and eating.

2. Redness and swelling of the gum

Infection of the gum causes redness and inflammation (swelling). The swelling might spread into the cheek or jaw area and could also result in swelling of the lymph nodes under your neck

3. Difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing

An infected wisdom tooth can result in stiffness or difficulty fully opening the mouth due to inflammation or swelling. Furthermore, if the swelling extends to the throat area, it may also cause difficulty swallowing.

4. Bad taste

An unpleasant taste or smell originating from the affected area may indicate the presence of infection and possibly pus accumulation.

Our private wisdom tooth removal process

During your initial consultation, our skilled dental team will assess the positioning of your wisdom teeth through clinical examination and imaging. Furthermore, we will discuss the necessity of extraction and address any concerns or questions you may have.

Following the evaluation results, we will create a personalised treatment plan. This plan will outline the specifics of the extraction procedure, including the number of teeth to be removed, anaesthesia options, and post-operative care.

1. Sedation

To ensure your comfort during the procedure, we offer various anaesthesia options, including local anaesthesia with or without intravenous sedation based on the complexity of the extraction and your personal preferences.

2. Tooth extraction

The process of tooth extraction depends on several factors including if the tooth is fully erupted, if it is pressing up against any other teeth, or if it lies close to dental nerves. Read below for more information.

3. Post-operative care

Following the extraction, we provide comprehensive post-operative care instructions. This includes guidelines for managing swelling, pain, and potential bleeding.

4. Follow up assessments

We schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your healing progress and address any concerns you may have. Our goal is to ensure a smooth and comfortable recovery.

Our wisdom tooth removal process is individualised depending on...

1. Eruption of the tooth

If the tooth is fully erupted and not impacted, our dental team may be able to remove it using forceps, similar to a routine tooth extraction. However, if the tooth is un-erupted or partially erupted, we will make an incision in the surrounding gum to enable us to reflect it back for better access to the tooth

2. Tooth impaction

If the tooth is impacted, meaning it's pressed against the adjacent tooth, it may necessitate the removal of supporting bone and cutting of the tooth into sections using a dental drill for extraction. Typically, the crown or top of the tooth is removed first, followed by the extraction of the remaining roots

3. Proximity to nerves

If the roots of the tooth are situated close to the Inferior Dental nerve, our dental team may recommend removing only the crown (top) of the tooth and leaving the roots in place to minimise the risk of damaging the nerve. This procedure, known as a 'coronectomy,' will be discussed with you before surgery.
