Endosteal implants

There are two main types of endosteal implants:

Root-form Implants: These implants resemble the shape of a natural tooth root and dentists insert them into the jawbone. They come in various sizes and shapes to accommodate bone densities and anatomical structures.

Plate-form Implants: Also known as blade implants, these are thin, flat implants inserted into a prepared channel in the jawbone. Although these implants were popular, root-form implants have largely replaced them due to their higher success rates.

Subperiosteal implants

Subperiosteal implants cater to patients with limited bone volume. They rest on the jawbone beneath the gum tissue (periosteum). The subperiosteal implant consists of a metal frame that rests on the jawbone and protrudes through the gum tissue. The protruding portion is the foundation for attaching the replacement teeth or dentures. While subperiosteal implants can be a viable option for certain cases, they are generally less preferred than endosteal implants due to higher failure rates and potential complications.

Zygomatic implants

Zygomatic implants, or zygoma implants, are specialised for patients with severe bone loss in the upper jaw (maxilla). These implants anchor in the zygomatic bone (cheekbone) instead of the jawbone, providing a secure foundation for supporting dental prosthetics.
Zygomatic implants are longer than traditional implants and are placed at an angle, passing through the sinus cavity and anchoring in the dense zygomatic bone. This approach eliminates the need for extensive bone grafting procedures, making it a suitable option for patients with significant bone resorption or defects in the upper jaw.

Mini dental implants

Mini dental implants, also known as small-diameter implants, are shorter and thinner than traditional implants. They are less invasive and are typically placed in areas with limited bone height or density. Mini implants are often stabilise dentures or serve as temporary solutions while awaiting the integration of standard implants. They are also used as permanent implants in certain situations, such as replacing small teeth or supporting partial dentures.

However, mini implants have a smaller surface area for osseointegration and may be less durable and long-lasting than standard-sized implants.

All on four dental implants

The All-on-4 dental implant system is a popular solution for patients who have lost all their teeth in one or both jaws. This system utilises four strategically placed implants in the jaw to support an entire arch of replacement teeth. The dentist places two implants at the front of the jaw and two at an angle at the back, taking advantage of the denser bone in the anterior and posterior regions. This strategic placement allows for a secure and stable foundation for a fixed prosthetic bridge, eliminating the need for removable dentures. The All-on-4 system offers several advantages, including a shorter treatment time and a lower overall cost than traditional full-mouth implant solutions.
