Guided Bone Regeneration

At Harley Street Implant Centre we specialise in a variety of dental implants including simple tooth implants through to complex guided bone regeneration techniques.

What is guided bone regeneration?

Guided Bone Regeneration is a surgical procedure aimed at regenerating bone in areas where it has been lost or compromised. It is often needed as part of dental implant placement in areas where bone loss has compromised the bone available to support dental implants. GBR works to facilitate the repair of lost bone structure through the placement of barrier membranes and bone graft materials to encourage the growth of new, healthy bone.

GBR process

At your initial consultation, our dental experts will perform a comprehensive assessment of your oral health, including evaluating the extent of bone loss. Our dental specialists will conduct this assessment using CBCT (3D) imaging. We will then discuss your treatment goals and determine if bone regeneration is necessary as part of your implant therapy

We will create a customised treatment plan based on the evaluation. This plan will outline specific details of the GBR procedure, including the choice of bone graft material and the type of barrier membrane to be used.

1. Implant Placement

An incision is made in the gums and the underlying bone accessed. A small hole is prepared in the bone into which a dental implant will be placed. We will cover any exposed areas of the implant not in the bone with GBR.

2. Bone Graft Placement

During the procedure, our dental specialists strategically place bone graft material in the area requiring regeneration. This material serves as a scaffold, promoting the growth of new bone cells.

3. Barrier Membrane Placement

We position a barrier membrane over the bone graft site. This membrane prevents the infiltration of soft tissues, allowing the bone to regenerate undisturbed.

4. Healing Period

Over the next few months, the dental implant & bone graft material integrates with your natural bone, and the barrier membrane guides the regeneration process.

Frequently Asked Questions for Guided Bone Regeneration

The results of GBR may take many months to show as the bone needs to fully integrate with the surrounding structures. As with any procedure, the healing process will depend on the extent of surgery and the patient’s healing response. We will subsequently monitor the progress of the GBR with regular follow up appointments in clinic.

As with most of our procedures, we can perform GBR under local anaesthetic. However, at the Harley Street Implant Centre we also have the option to provide sedation services to those who experience fear or anxiety, helping to settle your nerves as we build the foundations to your new smile! See our sedation services for more information.
